Some sections of Big Sky Snowmobile Trail are for experienced riders only. Portions of the trail at lower elevations generally follow logging roads and are well marked. Upper portions are more difficult to follow; intermittently marked open country. The trail can be broken down into sections.

Bear Creek to Squaw Creek is 24 km.
Squaw Creek to Moose Creek is 24 km.
Moose Creek to Porcupine Divide is 17.7 km.
Porcupine Divide to Buffalo Horn 19.3 km.
Buffalo Horn to Grayling Creek is 56.3 km. Length: 198 km.
